Examining the formalist (symbolism) and psychological (character) elements of Hosseini's The Kite Runner provides a significantly better insight to the social estrangement threaded throughout the story. The extent to which Hosseini employs a variance of symbolic attributes to metaphorically illustrate human struggle is both grand and far-reaching; that his use of psychological underpinnings draws a common denominator between knowing the right thing to do and ultimately doing it speaks to an incessant desire to embody the whole of a person's ability to choose. Whether Amir demonstrates reasonableness in the face of adversity is not as critical as whether he understands and accepts the decisions he does make. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
