ABSTRACT:
This 15 page report discusses Bolivia’s coca industry and the importance of coca as a mainstay of social and economic life. The coca industry is also a fundamental part of the Bolivian culture. It has been a integral to the spiritual and cultural life of Andean communities for thousands of years. It has only become the most (or one of the most) profitable crops for export from the region since the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Outside interests, primarily led by the Americans, have championed "alternative development." Cattle and alternative crops-- bananas, pineapples, yucca, tea—are what are considered as “alternative development.” Bibliography lists 10 sources.
