ABSTRACT:
A 41 page paper examining the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP) as a multipurpose tool for the New York Police Department (NYPD). Virtually every organization faces challenges in retaining experienced, knowledgeable employees while also attracting high-quality individuals to join the organization. The same is true for the NYPD, but with a twist. Programs encouraging early retirement years ago currently are draining the NYPD of its most experienced police officers, while negative stereotypes associated with police work hamper efforts to recruit officer candidates. The Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) is presented here as a solution to each problem, while also saving the city of New York millions per month.
