ABSTRACT:
A 5 page paper that explains the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the World Trade Organization, GATT's successor. GATT negotiations began after World War II for the purposes of liberalizing international trade by reducing tariffs and establishing some rules. GATT was never officially recognized, thus, the council could make recommendations only. The WTO is a formalized body with more than 140 members. The organization has official functions and purposes. These are discussed. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
