ABSTRACT:
This 17 page paper considers the problematic area of the cost an provision of the welfare system by various countries. To give a greater understanding the pensions system is examined as an example of the most sweeping of welfare schemes. The universal problems of an increase in the ageing population and life spans in conjunction with the falling birth rate is considered. A possible solution is then discussed; the privatisation of the welfare system, Chile is used as a model to illustrate this idea. The advantages and disadvantages are discussed and the suitability of the model for adoption by other countries is examined.
