Number of pages:

ABSTRACT:
This 7 page report discusses the modern military in Japan and what has led to the development of the Japanese military since the Meiji Restoration of the late 19th and very early 20th centuries. The Constitution of Japan, ratified soon after the end of World War II, specifically renounces war and the potential of war. Japan's Self Defense Forces (SDF) have evolved into an army larger than that of Israel and Japan has become the second largest military spender in the world, with annual defense outlays of over $50 billion. This report examines the means by which this all occurred.
