This 36 page paper examines the links between mental illness and crime and how this is dealt with in the UK criminal justice system. The paper starts by defining mental illness, looking at general definition and then at the legal definition used in the UK. The paper then considers what types of illness are classified as mental illness and the links between drugs, alcohol and crime. The way a crime is deemed to be committed is examined with the concepts of mens rea and actus reus and how the law is applied, including the use of an insanity defence. The paper then looks at the concept and application of care in the community. The bibliography cites 28 sources.
