ABSTRACT:
15 pages in length. Like so many before and since, disgruntled workers of Boston's finest sought their labor resolutions through a most disruptive and dangerous means: striking. Issues surrounding long hours, unsatisfactory working conditions and unfair wages worked together to create a political and economic quagmire so entrenched within the department that law enforcement officials felt they were left with no other choice than to impart a complete work stoppage, which commenced on September 9, 1919, just as the night shift was to come on duty. The events that ensued during the subsequent forty-eight hours provided undeniable testimony to the strength and determination Boston's police department displayed in standing firm upon their commitment for better working conditions, shorter hours and higher pay. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
