The Death Penalty: Arguments For and Against
Number of pages:

ABSTRACT:
This is a 4 page paper discussing the arguments presented for and against the death penalty. The arguments for and against the death penalty often involve similar areas of concern: religion, justice, deterrence, cost, and respect for human life among other aspects. Currently there are over 3,500 people on death row in the United States and the controversy over the continued implementation of the death sentence continues. Advocates for the support of the death penalty argue that public opinion demands continuation of the death penalty as still over 64% of Americans support it. This percentage has decreased recently however in view of the number of convictions which have been reversed based on new DNA evidence in many of the crimes which further supports one of the arguments against the death penalty; the number of innocent people on death row. This along with the over-representation of minorities on death row indicates to many that there is something intrinsically wrong with the system. Advocates however believe that the support for the death penalty perhaps relates to society believing in the moral benefits and the usefulness of doing justice.
