ABSTRACT:
This is a 5 page paper discussing the story of David and Goliath and its importance in the unity and teachings of the Church. The story of David and Goliath in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 17:4) is considered one of the central teachings in the Christian and Jewish religions. In addition to children enjoying the visual disparity between David and Goliath and the fact that David a small shepherd managed to beat a giant with a sling shot, the story itself provided unity at the time between the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, provided a consistent and basic truth about what the strength of God can accomplish and provides unity today in that it is still popular in the teachings of the Christian and Hebrew faiths. David was an ancestor of Christ which makes him a significant figure in addition to uniting the tribes of Israel, becoming King for forty years, and was considered responsible for writing the Book of Psalms. Researchers and scholars still study the life of David to try and understand the enormity of his defeating Goliath and his ongoing importance in the teaching of the basics of religious faith.
