ABSTRACT:
A 3 page paper discussing the focus of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Formed in 1967 when Singapore was two years into the second of its series of five-year plans that ultimately would gain it official designation as a mature economy, none of the original members was in a position to presume to dictate anything to any other nation. Member nations agree to standards of conduct and then stand by their agreements. In a region where honor is paramount, ASEAN prefers to adhere to that standard rather than to depend on a legal structure and approach. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
